$1.5 Billion From IRA to Strengthen America’s National Laboratories

    Today, The Biden-Harris Administration announced $1.5 billion from Inflation Reduction Act to build and upgrade America’s national laboratories. According to the DOE press release, the funding will upgrade scientific facilities, modernize infrastructure, and address deferred maintenance projects at DOE’s Office of Science-managed national laboratories. In addition, the findings will include clean energy technology that supports good-paying jobs and lower energy costs for families.

 

DOI Announces $45 Million to Build Climate Resilience in Tribal Communities

    On Wednesday, The Department of the Interior announced a $45 million investment from the BIL to address the disproportionate impacts of climate change in Tribal Communities. A total of 124 awards were made to support 76 Tribes and 8 Tribal organizations in climate implementation actions, ocean and coastal management planning, capacity building, relocation, managed retreat, and protect-in-place planning for climate risks. “Indigenous communities are facing unique and intensifying climate-related challenges that pose an existential threat to Tribal economies, infrastructure, lives and livelihoods,” said Secretary Deb Haaland. “Through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, we are making an unprecedented investment in Indian Country to help ensure that Native communities will have clean air, drinkable water, fertile soil and an overall good quality of life for generations to come.”  

 

FEMA Provides $714 Million in Individual Assistance for Survivor Recovery after Hurricane Ian

     On Thursday, FEMA announced more than $1.88 billion in federal grants, disaster loans and flood insurance payments has been provided to the state of Florida and households to help survivors jumpstart their recovery after Hurricane Ian. FEMA has provided $714 million to households and $322 million to the state for emergency response, while the U.S. Small Business Administration has provided $533 million in disaster loans and the National Flood Insurance Program has paid $313 million in claims. So far, FEMA has made individual assistance available to 26 counties in Florida, expanded Transitional Sheltering Assistance, currently providing housing for 2,447 households with 6,128 members. Furthermore, FEMA has received more than 43,000 flood insurance claims and paid more than $313 million to policyholders, including $163 million in advance payments.  

 

DOE Selects First-Ever Director of Puerto Rico Grid Modernization and Recovery Team

  The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) today announced that Agustín Carbó has been selected to serve as the Director for the new Puerto Rico Grid Modernization and Recovery Team (PR Grid Modernization Team). U.S. Secretary of Energy Jennifer M. Granholm made the announcement during keynote remarks at the 6th annual Solar + Energy Storage Association of Puerto Rico Summit in San Juan. The PR Grid Modernization Team, led by DOE, will support Puerto Rico in rebuilding an electricity grid that is more resilient, more secure, and capable of supporting 100% clean electricity by 2050.
