DOE Announces $80 Million To Strengthen American Manufacturing

June 7, 2023 | Source: DOE

On Wednesday, DOE announced $80 million in BIL grant funding for small- and medium-sized manufacturing firms (SMMs) through the  Industrial Assessment Center (IAC) and Combined Heat and Power Technical Assistance Partnership (CHP TAP) programs. Qualifying SMMs are eligible to receive a free assessment that can lead to lower operating costs and reduced carbon and non-carbon pollution emissions. The funding aims to accelerate the adoption of DOE recommendations to improve energy efficiency to lower costs and reduce industrial emissions. Recommendations from the assessments offer SMMs an opportunity to take advantage of improved reliability, greater energy resilience, and more versatile fuel flexibility.

EPA Invests $115 million in Funding to Respond to the Drinking Water Emergency in Jackson, Mississippi

June 6, 2023 | Source: EPA

On Tuesday, EPA announced that the City of Jackson, Mississippi will receive $115 million to support critical water infrastructure investments that will help ensure safe and reliable drinking water for residents. Flooding in Mississippi in early August 2022 caused the already vulnerable public water system to lack sufficient pressures in some areas, leaving around 150,000 residents without drinkable water. This award to the Jackson Public Water System will be used to stabilize and rebuild the city’s water infrastructure, including identifying and fixing leaks in the distribution system, developing a system-wide assessment of valves and hydrants, ensuring adequate pumping capacity to maintain water pressure and distribution, and developing a system stabilization and sustainability plan.

Projects will address more than 400 at-grade crossings nationwide, improve safety, closing at-grade crossings, and improving existing at-grade crossings where train tracks and roads intersect. FRA dedicated $15.7 million for planning activities and $33.1 million for project development and design activities that will build a pipeline of projects for future funding, and 22 percent of all funding ($127.5 million) was awarded to projects in rural areas or on Tribal lands.

DOE Releases First-Ever National Clean Hydrogen Strategy and Roadmap to Build a Clean Energy Future, Accelerate American Manufacturing Boom

June 5, 2023 | Source: DOE

On Monday, DOE released the U.S. National Clean Hydrogen Strategy and Roadmap, a comprehensive framework for accelerating the production, processing, delivery, storage, and use of clean hydrogen—a versatile and flexible energy carrier that can be produced with low or zero carbon emissions. Achieving commercial-scale hydrogen deployment is a key component of President Biden’s Investing in America agenda, and critical to building a strong clean energy economy while enabling our long-term decarbonization objectives. Estimates indicate that America’s growing hydrogen economy has the potential to add 100,000 net new direct and indirect jobs by 2030. Developed by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), in partnership other federal agencies, the Strategy and Roadmap underscores the President’s whole-of-government approach to addressing the climate crisis and achieving a carbon-free grid by 2035 and a net-zero emissions economy by 2050.
