CFS Award Announcement:

Hemlock Semiconductor Awarded $325 Million in CHIPS for America Funding

New Manufacturing Facility in Michigan to Produce and Purify Hyper-Pure Semiconductor-Grade Polysilicon

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

October 22, 2024

Washington, D.C. — Capitol Funding Solutions (CFS) is proud to announce that a proposal written on behalf of Hemlock Semiconductor (HSC) has been awarded $325 million in direct funding through the CHIPS Incentives Program for Commercial Fabrication Facilities. This funding will support the construction of a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility on HSC’s existing campus in Hemlock, Michigan. The new facility will focus on producing and purifying hyper-pure, semiconductor-grade polysilicon, a critical material for the semiconductor industry.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

The project is expected to have a significant economic impact, creating nearly 180 high-quality manufacturing jobs and generating over 1,000 construction jobs during the buildout phase. As the only U.S.-based manufacturer of hyper-pure polysilicon, HSC plays a vital role in the global semiconductor supply chain, and this expansion will further solidify its position. Founded in 1961, HSC is one of just five companies worldwide capable of producing polysilicon at the purity levels required for advanced semiconductor applications.

Polysilicon is the foundational material for microprocessors, AI chips, memory devices, and power electronics, giving semiconductor chips their essential properties. With this CHIPS investment, HSC aims to significantly expand its capacity to meet the growing demand for semiconductor-grade polysilicon, supporting both cutting-edge chip manufacturing and the broader semiconductor ecosystem.

This investment will not only bolster HSC’s production capabilities but also enhance U.S. national, economic, and energy security—long-standing priorities for HSC. The company remains dedicated to ensuring a stable and secure supply of critical materials to the semiconductor market, contributing to the continued growth and resilience of this essential industry.
