CFS Award Announcement:

EnerSys Advanced Systems Wins $198.6 Million from Department of Energy for Lithium-Ion Cell Production Facility

The project will enhance domestic battery production, support industrial and defense markets, and create hundreds of high-wage jobs in South Carolina

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

September 25, 2024

Washington, D.C. — Capitol Funding Solutions (CFS) is pleased to announce that a proposal written for EnerSys Advanced Systems was awarded $198,679,760 through Round II of the Battery Materials Processing and Battery Manufacturing and Recycling program. The funding will establish a new lithium-ion battery manufacturing facility in Piedmont, South Carolina, to produce high-performance prismatic and cylindrical cells.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

EnerSys will use the awarded funding to construct a new 500,000-square-foot lithium-ion battery cell manufacturing facility in Piedmont, South Carolina. The project will focus on producing high-performance prismatic and cylindrical cells, providing cost-competitive domestic capabilities for medium and specialty industrial and defense markets. Expected to generate 500 permanent high-wage jobs and 400 construction jobs, the facility will directly contribute to essential infrastructure, including Direct Current Fast Charging stations, grid stability, backup power solutions, data centers, telecommunication networks, and industrial e-mobility applications. Furthermore, the ENS1 cell's high-volume benefits will enable EnerSys to establish a specialized production line for the U.S. Department of Defense, building upon EnerSys’ long-standing support of military operations. By utilizing critical minerals, materials, and components sourced domestically and allied-wide, EnerSys is committed to enhancing the supply chain and national security of domestic battery production.

This project represents a significant advancement in battery technology and presents a unique opportunity for the U.S. to leverage EnerSys’ extensive capabilities and market reach. As the largest industrial battery manufacturer globally, EnerSys brings over 125 years of experience and a robust portfolio of patented, cutting-edge energy storage solutions and systems technology to this initiative. With a customer base exceeding 10,000 across over 100 countries, EnerSys will leverage its vertical integration capabilities, encompassing battery materials development, component manufacturing, cell and module production, and pack development, to drive necessary market demand and adoption for the ENS1 cell.
