CFS Award Announcement:

Cabot Corporation Awarded $50 Million by Department of Energy to Boost Domestic Battery Supply Chain

Conductive Additives Plant to Support Lithium-Ion Battery Manufacturing in Michigan

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

September 26, 2024

Washington, D.C. — Capitol Funding Solutions (CFS) is pleased to announce that a proposal written for Cabot Corporation was awarded $50 million through Round II of the Battery Materials Processing and Battery Manufacturing and Recycling program. The funding will support Cabot’s development of a U.S.-based manufacturing facility to produce battery-grade carbon nanotubes and conductive additive dispersions at a commercial scale — materials essential to the domestic lithium-ion battery supply chain for electric vehicles (EVs) and the electrical grid.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

Cabot Corporation’s new facility in Wayne County, Michigan, will be a cornerstone in strengthening the U.S. battery manufacturing industry. The project will convert a former automotive site into the first U.S. production facility capable of commercially manufacturing battery-grade carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and conductive additive (CA) dispersions. These materials are integral to producing lithium-ion batteries, which power EVs and support the nation’s evolving electrical grid infrastructure.

The facility will have an initial capacity to produce 1,000 tonnes of battery-grade CNTs and up to 12,000 tonnes of conductive additive dispersions per year. In addition to producing materials for EVs, the plant’s output will benefit the electrical grid by supporting the development of energy storage. These storage systems help stabilize the grid and ensure a consistent energy supply, even when renewable energy production fluctuates. Cabot’s new facility’s output will have a lasting impact on the entire clean energy ecosystem.

This project is particularly vital to reducing dependency on foreign imports of battery materials, a strategic priority for the country’s clean energy future and national security. By onshoring the production of these essential components, Cabot Corporation will help create a resilient and sustainable domestic supply chain for the growing EV market and broader energy storage sector. Furthermore, this initiative is expected to generate significant economic benefits for the region, including creating hundreds of new jobs during construction and once the facility is fully operational. Approximately 250 skilled tradespeople will be employed during construction, and 85 permanent, high-quality jobs will be created when the facility begins operations. The success of this facility will directly support national climate goals by enabling the broader adoption of electric vehicles and renewable energy technologies.
