CFS Award Announcement:

Battery Council International Awarded $5 Million to Launch Consortium for Lead Battery Leadership

DOE Funding Will Accelerate Long-Duration Energy Storage Research

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

MAY 8, 2024

Washington, D.C. Capitol Funding Solutions (CFS) is pleased to announce that a proposal written for Battery Council International (BCI) was awarded $4.97 million through the Department of Energy’s Storage Innovations 2030: Technology Liftoff Program. The funding will be used to establish the Consortium for Lead Battery Leadership (CLBL) in Long Duration Energy Storage applications (LDES), which will bring together BCI, the Consortium for Battery Innovation, eight U.S. lead battery manufacturers, and three national laboratories to conduct pre-competitive research aimed at improving lead battery performance.

ABOUT THE AWARDED PROJECT:

Project Title: Consortium for Lead Battery Leadership in LDES

Project Director: Roger Miksad

Project Location: Chicago, IL

Federal Share: $4,972,746

The Consortium for Lead Battery Leadership in LDES will improve lead battery performance to meet the nation’s growing need for clean, efficient, cost-effective energy. The Consortium will pursue pre-competitive research to achieve the goals of DOE’s Energy Storage Grand Challenge (ESGC) by developing lead batteries capable of 10+ hours of storage with a pathway to $0.05/kWh Levelized Cost of Storage by 2030. Combining advanced technoeconomic analytical tools with atomic level fundamental material science research, the researchers will construct a new lead battery LDES use-case model using technoeconomic analysis.
